Traditional Singing II
Monica-Lisa Mills & Matt Borgmeyer
MONDAY JAN 6, 13, 20, 27, FEB 3, 10, 17, 24
$295 (1 hour 15 min class, 8 weeks)
This class will build on the foundations of Traditional Singing I with a more in depth exploration of a few traditional song styles, depending on the interests of the class, and additional time to workshop the songs in class. We will learn more about the history and context of the songs and styles as well. The goal will be to end the course with a few songs that you would feel comfortable initiating on your own.
The class is supplemented by a course website containing background materials, online recordings and lyrics, and at least one singing gathering outside of class.
This course is an hour and a fifteen minutes long and meets eight times. Please bring instruments if you play them. All levels of experience welcome. Limited to 10 people.
Monica-Lisa Mills has spent the past ten years studying traditional unaccompanied singing with an emphasis on Irish/Gaelic (sean nós) songs and, more recently, Appalachian ballads. She has an extensive background in vocal training and performance, from early music, classical and choral singing, to musicals and experimental harmony singing. She trained as an actor at North Carolina School of the Arts with a focus on voice and music.
Matt Borgmeyer brings a mixture of musical experience to Jalopy. He has performed for the past twelve years as part of the Manhattan Choral Ensemble with a grounding in the western choral canon. Many moons ago he was the musical director of Yale’s folk-singing group Tangled Up in Blue. He has continued his studies of traditional music at Jalopy with classes in banjo, guitar, ensemble work and vocal harmony.
