About Ross Martin, Max Johnson & Jeff Davis
Guitarist Ross Martin has performed in concert halls, honky-tonks, theaters, rock clubs, living rooms, on festival stages, television programs and everywhere in between. Having grown up in the suburbs of Dallas, TX, with brief stints in East Tennessee, Ross headed West after attending the University of North Texas and earning a Bachelor of Music degree in jazz studies. After living for ten years in the front range area of Colorado, he relocated to the east coast and has resided in the New York City borough of Brooklyn for the past five years. His musical path has covered as much territory as his physical one. Reflecting his love of diverse genres like jazz, bluegrass, country, folk, experimental and classical music, Ross has always felt at home with fellow musicians who seek to reconcile, through their music, the incredible wealth of styles available to listeners in this global and digital age. He has toured and performed with a wide range of artists including Matt Flinner, Tony Furtado, Ron Miles, Mollie O’Brien, The Motet, Caroline Herring, Dwele, Sonya Kitchell and many others.
Max Johnson is a bassist and composer known most for his work in New York's free jazz and bluegrass circles. He has worked with masters such as Henry Grimes, Anthony Braxton, John Zorn, William Parker, and Joseph Jarman, and leads his own groups, most currently a trio with Kirk Knuffke (cornet) & Ziv Ravitz (drums). Max Johnson has traveled the world performing in Germany, Switzerland, England and Canada; to the stages of the Jazz Standard, Le Poisson Rouge, BB King's, the Highline Ballroom and has brought him to perform at the Vision Festival, the Bern Jazz Festival, Quebec City Int'l Summer Fest, Lollapalooza, and the Zappanale festival. His album "Quartet" featuring Mark Whitecage, Steve Swell & Tyshawn Sorey will be released by NotTwo in June of 2012 and his new Trio album with Kirk Knuffke and Ziv Ravitz is coming soon.
Percussionist/composer Jeff Davis has established himself in New York as a vital contributor to the local and international creative music scenes. Jeff is widely sought out for his unique, textural approach to the drum set, as well as for his power and intensity. As a featured member of a number of creative ensembles in New York, Davis has recorded for such labels as Clean Feed, Fresh Sound/New Talent, Green Leaf, Loyal Label, Jazzaway, and innova records. These ensembles include the Jesse Stacken Trio, Michael Bates Outside Sources, Kirk Knuffke Quartet, Landon Knoblock Trio/Quartet, Ben Holmes Quartet, Pascal Niggenkemper ‘Newfield’ trio, Pedro Giruado Jazz Orchestra, Pete Robbins’ Unnamed Quartet, Jon Irabagon’s Outright!, Eivind Opsvik’s Overseas, Tone Collector(Tony Malaby, Eivind Opsvik, Jeff Davis), the RIDD Quartet, Kris Davis Quartet, and the Ryan Keberle Organ Group. In addition to these working bands, Davis has also performed with such artists as Tony Malaby, Chris Speed, Gebhard Ullmann, Brad Shepik, Ralph Alessi, and Ron Horton.
Together, these three musicians arrange, rearrange and derange the classic bluegrass, oldtime and gospel repertoire. Using the non-string band instrumentation of electric guitar, bass and drums, they inject this traditional music with a new sound, and along with the extensive use of free improvisation, this collective trio bends and twists a new exciting world of music out of these old chestnuts. If you want to see a set of traditional standards played by an electric trio of some of New York's greatest improvisers, make sure not to miss this concert!
